A quarter of the Filipino population still lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25/day. Poverty within families is one of the factors contributing to vulnerabilities of children to commercial sexual exploitation. Parents resort to selling their children to perform sexual services in return for money. In Manila alone, 1.5 million street children enter a life of child prostitution, pornography, and trafficking for sexual purposes. Additionally, even after being rescued, many identified victims do not have financial resources for proper care, treatment, or opportunity to truly escape their abusers.
